Some people would consider hobbies as distinct from their profession but to Arishma Baran, our Model of the Fortnight, many of the former could shape her life and career.
“I hope to become a flight attendant and travel around the world. Among my other goals are to become a successful dancer and actor. Many people have hobbies but I consider these as possible vocations,” she said.
Arishma, who recently celebrated her 17th birthday, fondly remembers her native Fiji, which she described as ‘A beautiful and Sunny Pacific Island.’
Proud to be a Wellingtonian since her family moved to the Capital when she was still in her formative years, the teenager completed a year-long course in Office Administration and Computing at Whitireia Polytechnic.
One of the best things that happened during this year was entering the Miss India Wellington 2013 contest (Indian Newslink, June 15, 2013). I was filled with pride when I was declared winner of the ‘Miss Talent’ category. This was an amazing experience,” she said.
She chose a contemporary dance to the music of an old Hindi film, narrating the story of the first earthquake that Christchurch suffered in September 2010.
Her dance, accompanied by a slideshow, appealed to the audience, making some of them shed tears for the victims of the natural disaster.
“I discovered that I had a passion and talent for dancing when I was five years old. Apart from utilising every opportunity to give vent to this hobby, I believe that my performance at the beauty pageant received wide appreciation,” she said.
Arishma also loves facing the camera, currently for modelling.
“Photographer Bhikhu Bhula brought out the best in me with his mastery over the art of photography. I am also keen in acting and would love to travel around the world. I hope to achieve my goals in life with dedication and added talent,” she said.
Arishma is grateful to her parents and members of her immediate family, who she said have been a great source of inspiration.
