Donations through Radio Tarana arrive

Five containers of gifts and donations from Radio Tarana of Auckland were received at the Ministry of Provincial Development’s top yard in Walu Bay, Suva on January 10.

A four-day appeal by the radio station resulted in a huge amount of donation, received by the National Disaster Management Committee for distribution to the victims of Tropical Cyclone ‘Evan’.

These were gifts from former Fiji citizens, Fijians in New Zealand and Kiwis, who donated a number of items including non-perishable food, water, clothing, medical supplies and other essentials.

Officials witnessed the opening of the first container at Walu Bay, following which, Disaster Management Committee Director Lt Col Manasa Tagicakibau said that the Fiji Government was thankful to New Zealanders for the donation.

“Surely these five containers of gifts from Radio Tarana will be a form of blessing to those who are struggling to collect the pieces left behind by Cyclone Evan. We are thankful to everyone in the Land of the Long White Cloud for their generous donation,” he said.

Donations from overseas for Cyclone Evan were made possible after the Government declared a State of Natural Disaster.

The above was a Government of Fiji Media Release. Cyclone Evan raged through Western Samoa, American Samoa, Fiji, Tonga and Wallis & Futuna between December 9 and 25, 2012, destroying properties and killing 14 people. The picture here shows ‘Evan’ raging through Suva in Fiji.
