Ways and means of coping with disabled children will be the focus of a seminar due to be held at the Fickling Convention Centre in Three Kings, Auckland on October 30 from 930 am.
The programme, organised by the Child Development Team at the Auckland District Health Board, aims to educate parents of South Asian origin on issues related to disability and exchange information and experience.
The theme of the free seminar is, “Assessing Disability Services in Auckland.’
Auckland DHB Community Support Worker Hymavathi Danthala said that having a child with a disability or developmental delay can be challenging for parents and caregivers.
“It can be particularly difficult for families who have recently come to New Zealand and do not know the services available. One of the services that works with children with disabilities and their families is our Child Development Team,” she said.
Ms Danthala said that New Zealanders do not view disability as a stigma.
“Interpreters would be available if required. We will also have the facility to look after preschool children if parents need to bring them along. There will be short presentations about the services and lots of information tables,” she said.
Those keen on attending the seminar should register their names on (09) 6390200 (Extension) 27507 or on 021-02119335.
