Ethnic Communities Ministry marks a milestone

The launch of the Ministry of Diversity, Inclusion and Ethnic Communities at the Executive Hall of Parliament in Wellington on Thursday, July 1, 2021 marked a milestone in the history of New Zealand and inaugurated a new chapter in the advancement of ethnic communities.

Indian Newslink joined more than 250 men and women, among who were Ministers, Members of Parliament and representatives of a cross-section of our growing ethnic population at what became a solemn and proud occasion.

Priyanca Radhakrishnan, first person of Indian and South Asian origin to become a Minister of the Crown in New Zealand will lead the Ministry with Mervin Singam, a ‘veteran’ of public service as its Chief Executive.

“The Ministry will continue to deliver the functions of the Office of Ethnic Communities and look to build additional functions and influence across the public sector. Many from our diverse ethnic communities have been calling for a Ministry for some time now, and I want to acknowledge them today. The priorities of the Ministry will be to promote the value of diversity and improve inclusion of ethnic communities, ensure that government services are accessible and address barriers to employment,” she said at the launch.

Indian Newslink Sports and Recreation Awards

This news, along with two events of Indian Newslink are the lead stories of our July 1, 2021 Digital Edition. The first of these-Indian Newslink Seventh Annual Sports, Community, Arts and Culture Awards will celebrate the launch of the new Ministry. Scheduled to be held on Monday, August 2, 2021 from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm at Mahatma Gandhi Centre, 145 New North Road, Eden Terrace in Auckland City, it will honour achievers in various fields.

INL SCAC Awards 2021

Deputy Prime Minister and Sport and Recreation Minister Grant Robertson, Minister for Transport, Workplace Relations and Safety Michael Wood, Auckland Mayor Phil Goff, Act Party Leader David Seymour will be Our Chief Guest and Special Guests of Honour at the Seventh Annual Indian Newslink Sports, Community, Arts and Culture Awards 2021.

They will be joined, among others by Labour, National and ACT MPs and Directors of political parties and community leaders.

Tickets for the Awards Night, priced at $50 plus GST per person (including dinner) and tables seating ten persons each at $500 plus GST are now on sale.

Dr Ashley Bloomfield for Our Lecture

Dr Ashley Bloomfield, Director General of Health and Chief Executive at the Ministry of Health will be the Guest Speaker at the Eleventh Annual Indian Newslink Lecture. The formal Black Tie Dinner event will be held on Monday, August 16, 2021 at Mahatma Gandhi Centre from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm.

The theme of this year’s Lecture is ‘Governance Challenges during a Pandemic,’ considering the sensitivity in securing and sharing information, risk assessment and management, coordination, logistics and communicating with the people throughout the country and stakeholders overseas. New Zealand has evolved its own model of governance to suit its geographic position, demographic situation and various other factors, which can become a future global guide.

National Party MP for Botany Christopher Luxon will be the Master of Ceremonies and India’s High Commissioner to New Zealand Muktesh Pardeshi will provide his views on the Lecture under ‘Reflections.’ Auckland Mayor Phil Goff will deliver the Welcome Address, while Diversity, Inclusion and Ethnic Communities Minister Priyanca Radhakrishnan will explain the objectives of the Indian Newslink Lecture relating it to principles of Good Governance.

Tickets to the forthcoming Lecture are classified into three categories: Platinum: $150 plus GST per person and $1500 plus GST for a table of ten persons. Gold: $75 plus GST per person and $750 plus GST for a table of ten persons. Bronze: $50 plus GST per person and $500 plus GST for a table of ten persons.
