Fijian students do well in India

Prime Minister Commodore Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama said students from Fiji undertaking educational pursuits in India were doing well in various courses and programmes.

He thanked the Indian government for providing educational opportunities for his citizens to make them better qualified and competitive in their professions.

He made the statement during his recent visit to the Barefoot College situated in the Ajmer District of Rajasthan in India.

Ten women from Cakaudrove, Macuata, Bua, and Ba are currently undergoing a six- month course in solar engineering at the College. Fiji’s Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Ministry is coordinating their study as a part of its objectives to empower women to become solar engineers in Fiji.

“Thank you for giving me this opportunity to meet with our students being trained at the Barefoot College. I have no doubt that they will rise in their career,” he said in a statement.

The student programme was the result of the visit of Barefoot College founder Bunker Roy to Fiji last year.

“We have so far trained more than 300 women as solar engineers from the Africa and Fiji would also benefit from their study,” he said.

Mr Bainimarama was in India last month to attend a conference of the International Sugar Council, of which he is the Vice-Chairman.
