Melissa Lee was a media veteran before entering Parliament on National Party List in November 2008. Since then, she has been a vociferous spokesperson on media matters, bringing her extensive experience and thought-providing expertise on issues affecting the Nation. Her concern over the government’s proposed merger of Radio New Zealand (RNZ) and Television New Zealand (TVNZ), is therefore worthy of debate.
We have led the issue with her article (exclusive to Indian Newslink) in which she has expressed her reservation over the ‘Expert Governance Group’ established by the government to advise on the merge of the two public media giants. She is worried that the Group is ill-qualified and ill-equipped to consider an issue of great significance to the future of people’s media. According to her, it would be “yet another failed model in a long line of reviews, working groups and Ministerial consultations over the past several years, some of which have yet to even begin their work in earnest.”
“It is also important to note that lack of a clear cut time frame for the Governance Group’s work will no doubt see it be yet another bureaucratic waste of Ministerial resources rather than championing a best practice approach for the future of media,” she said.
Suspension of flights from India
We also take a dispassionate view of the New Zealand government’s decision to temporarily suspend flights from India (until April 28, 2021) in view of the rising number of arriving passengers testing positive at the Managed Isolation Quarantine facilities. A few community leaders have spoken to Indian Newslink, endorsing a majority view that the decision was right and that efforts and sacrifices of the New Zealand team of five million should not be lost.
