The performance of Simon Bridges at the National Party Conference in Christchurch was remarkable and if he continues to display strong leadership, he may be able to close ranks and concentrate on the general election due next year.
His speech was rejuvenating and for the time being at least, there seems to be solidarity within the Party. He received wide applause when he said, “You are the engine room, the heart, at the very centre of everything that is the economy. Our bottom line is making sure you and your family have every opportunity to live the best life you can.”
He meant New Zealanders of course, but managed to make a major impact with his caucus colleagues and the Party hierarchy.
The emerging scenario
The two-day conference witnessed the presence of two National veterans- former Prime Minister John Key and former Deputy Prime Minister Sir Jim McLay. From the look of things, it would come as no surprise if the two former leaders campaign for National.
A recharged National attacking from all fronts could be cause for worry for Labour, which may have to go on its own at the General Election 2020, for the current low rate of polling (less than 5%), New Zealand First and the Green Party may not make it to Parliament.
Labour should deliver
Labour has had some major policy gains over the past year and Jacinda Ardern has raised her status nationally and internationally not only for her sincere governance but also for the way in which she responded to the March 15, 2019 Christchurch massacre.
But the Party has to get ahead with much of the work left undone and fulfil the promises it made during his 2017 campaign.
Indian Newslink will of course remain neutral and provide a platform for both to promote their policies and opinion.
One thing is certain now: New Zealand will witness a bitter political war in 2020.
