The Suva High Court has refused the second application of Former Fiji National University Vice-Chancellor Dr Ganesh Chand to stay the proceedings.
Chand was charged with one count of Abuse of Office by the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption in 2015. It is alleged that Chand while being employed in the Public Service abused the authority of his office.
It is also alleged that he approved the payments for overseas medical treatment for the then Minister of Education and Chairman of the FNU Council Filipe Bole without the Council’s approval.
Chand had filed a notice of motion to strike out the application and permanent stay on the proceedings.
High court Judge Justice Riyaz Hamza refused the applications.
Chand’s trial will be held from July 16 to July 27, during which 22 witnesses are expected to take the stand.
The matter has been adjourned to July 6th for pre-trial conference.
