A group of Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) students will go ‘bald’ on May 19 in aid of the ‘Leukaemia & Blood Donation Foundation (LBF).
The ‘Shave Event’ will be held at the MIT Campus in Otara (Manukau) between 12 pm and 2 pm, and all the participants thus far are girls.
School of Communications student Anjiline Chaudhary, an Indo-Fijian, has taken the initiative to promote the Campaign among her friends, including Mai Digby from Vietnam and Adut Duom from Sudan.
She said ‘Shave for a Cure’ is national fundraising campaign launched by LBF and that the annual event raises funds for patient support and research.
“Blood cancers combined (Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma) are the fifth most common cancer in New Zealand. Every day, six children and adults in New Zealand are diagnosed with a blood cancer or a related blood condition.”
She said shaving is a bold but simple way of supporting those living with blood cancers and that many of them lose their hair as a result of life-saving treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Ms Digby said, “Every dollar will help a leukaemia patient in a meaningful way.”
“It is not too late for others to sign up to shave. LBF is offering people raising more than $500, a ‘Shave11 T Shirt designed by New Zealand’s hot street fashion label, Huffer.”
