Traditional values combine with modern style

Indians are often ‘accused’ of being either too traditional (wedded to outmoded customs and practices) or too modern (with little respect for social and moral values).

Moderate people like Azad Sheikh (Mobil Mangere and Master Franchisee of Country Fried Chicken) and Mohammed Sadiq are therefore a source of admiration and endearment. They value tradition and custom, while simultaneously embracing pragmatic values and concepts of modern living.

Mr Sheikh and his wife Saiedah believe that everyone should have access to good education, ability to pursue a good career and opportunities to progress in life. His eldest son Aizaz, a graduate, is the Business Development Manager, in charge of Franchise Operations in his Company, while Zeead is the Operations Manager, with wide responsibilities within the Group. Farihah, their only daughter, is currently studying to obtain a diploma in Web Designing.

“Children must have the right exposure to give vent to their talents and choose a vocation in which they have aptitude and interest. We have given our children the best values and we are confident that they will continue to respect Islamic teachings and promote all the good things in life,” he said.

Their belief was evident at the Reception they hosted at the Malaeola Community Centre in the South Auckland suburb of Mangere on March 19, 2011, to celebrate the Wedding of their son Zeead with Shahima. (See related story in this section).

Imran Sheikh, a cousin of Mr Azad, who was the Master of Ceremonies at the Reception, recalled how, from humble beginnings, the latter has grown to occupy a position of importance in New Zealand’s business community, serving a cross-section of the people.

Family Roots

Similar sentiments came to the fore during the speeches by the members of both families and others.

Faizal Siddiqi, brother of Shahima, said his family was proud of its roots, heritage and social and other values.

“We are a family of five children. Shahima was just a few months old when the family moved to New Zealand from Fiji. She graduated from the Papatoetoe High School and went on to the University of Auckland to obtain her graduate degree (BA) in Arts,” he said.

Shahima, who is energetic and well focused on life, is employed at Mercury Energy, he said.

“We have given a piece of our heart with all our love. We would like to see that love grow and become greater in her married life,” Faizal said.
