Muslim School joins Integrated System

A Muslim educational institution providing Islamic education and the New Zealand curriculum has obtained Government permission to become an Integrated School.

Zayed College for Girls (ZCG) based in the South Auckland suburb of Mangere (44 Westney Road) joined the 330 plus Integrated Schools on New Year’s Day.

The School is owned and managed by the Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable & Humanitarian Foundation New Zealand, named after the former Ruler of the United Arab Emirates.

As well as offering Islamic Studies including the Holy Quran, Arabic, compulsory subjects (English, Mathematics and Science), the School provides a number of optional subjects for Year 7 to 13 students.

The Management is now seeking support and suggestions from the wider communities to provide value-added teaching and other services as a part of its future development plans.

Head of Science Department and School Spokesperson for New Zealand Qualifications Authority issues Fawziyyah Rafiq said State Integration would enable the School to access better resources and offer a wider range of options for students.

“Integration will also mean greater accountability to the State to ensure that the ZCG continues on the path of excellence in teaching and learning,” she said.

She said students will continue to receive quality Islamic education in conjunction with the New Zealand Curriculum and NCEA systems but with more resources and programmes.

The College, established in 2001, has almost all facilities offered by a modern educational institution including a library, computer suites, a swimming pool and a gymnasium. It also operates a transport service for the benefit of students from various parts of Auckland.

Tertiary Education

Ms Rafiq said ZCG is culturally inclusive and offers a range of pathways for tertiary study.

“We follow the New Zealand Curriculum, providing NCEA for all senior students and juniors who show ability to achieve at higher levels.

“Students have the benefit of an intensive literacy and numeracy programme, as well as extension activities such as the CREST Awards of the Royal Society of New Zealand,” she said.

She said teachers encourage students to adopt critical thinking and self-motivation as methods of enhancement.

The College will be open for enrolments from 18 January for classes commencing on February 1.
