Community leaders representing a number of organisations have pledged to work together to make Auckland a better City.
More than 300 leaders were at a Regional Summit on December 14, 2010.
The Auckland Council hosted the ‘Act Local, Work Regional, Work Together’ Regional Summit with the Auckland Community Development Alliance (ACDA).
Mayor Len Brown said he was keen to have constructive engagement with Auckland’s community and establish a Community Development Charter.
“This is a great starting place for discussions about what the communities expect from the new Auckland Council. Community is at the heart of achieving a livable and beautiful Auckland,” he said.
Mr Brown said the ‘Summit was a historic step for Auckland communities and the Council to truly start working together as a region.
Yvonne Powley, Spokesperson for ACDA and North Shore Community and Social Services Inc said the Summit gave a mandate for future action.
“It is a huge step forward. We would like to see community development as part of the Council’s core business, embedded into the Council culture and reflected in its mechanisms,” she said.
The Asia Network Inc Programme Manager Vishal Rishi said effective engagement and participation should be a two-way process.
“It should begin at the grass roots level and ensure that all voices, including those of ethnic groups are heard,” he said.
