The Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA) has announced the categories for its seventh season of competition ‘The Moment.’
HIPA will offer artists the chance to enter four main categories with ‘The Moment’ serving as the main theme, along with both forms of the ‘General’ category and the returning ‘Portfolio’ category.
Rounding off HIPA’s categories for the seventh season will be a dedicated video category, which is set to be offered by HIPA for the first time in its history. The ‘Time-lapse’ category will allow visual artists to take part in the competition with short videos that will need to meet various technical specifications and rules.
Grand Prize
HIPA has also announced the Grand Prize Award for the seventh season of USD $120,000, will not be limited to submissions in the main theme ‘The Moment’ but will be awarded to any submission that takes part in the season’s competition.
HIPA Secretary General Ali bin Thalith said, “Through a directive from Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and Patron of HIPA, we today announce the opening of submissions for the seventh season of competition which will be themed ‘The Moment.’ Sheikh Hamdan stressed the importance of spreading the culture of photography and the arts to the rest of the world through HIPA, and we aim to continue to do that in the coming season. We would also like to take this opportunity to announce that the deadline for submissions for HIPA’s seventh season of competition will be the 31st of October 2017 at 11.59 pm (UAE Standard).”
Time Lapse Category
Commenting on the launch of the new ‘Time-lapse’ category, Bin Thalith said, “Through the launch of the ‘Time-lapse’ category, we have set out a huge challenge to all creative visual artists, and not only photographers, to take part in our seventh season of competition. At HIPA, we always aspire to expand our reach within the arts community, and feel that through this unique opportunity we will connect with a larger group of talented creative artists. Likewise, the move to open our Grand Prize Award to any submission in the seventh season of competition will no doubt increase competition amongst photographers taking part and push them to submit their best photographs in any category they enter.”
Portfolio Category
For the second season in succession, the ‘Portfolio’ category will allow photographers the chance to showcase their storytelling skills through a series of related photographic submissions. The category was able to attract 33,950 photographs upon its introduction into HIPA, cementing itself as one of the most popular categories witnessed in the competition. The ‘General’ category is also open for submissions to photographers this season, and will once again have two sub-categories for black and white, and coloured submissions respectively. A staple at HIPA since the first season of competition, the category remains as attractive as ever for photographers who have an outstanding eye for photography that may not necessarily fall into any of the other categories on offer.
Special Awards
HIPA’s seventh season will also see the introduction of two new special awards to add to the existing ‘Photography Appreciation Award’. Firstly, the ‘Photography Content Creator Award’ will be presented to a person or publication that has positively impacted the art of photography through promotion, publishing of content or invention of related photographic technology. Also, HIPA will look to award the ‘Emerging Person/Organisation in Photography Award’ to an emerging person or organisation that has shown outstanding work or vision in the photography industry on a regional, national or international level.
Submissions for HIPA’s seventh season can now be accepted on the official website, www.HIPA.ae. The deadline for submissions will be October 31, 2017 at 1159 pm (UAE Standard).
