New Zealand’s Muslim community demonstrated in Auckland last weekend its penchant for solidarity and community work, while simultaneously fostering family values and virtues of good character and behaviour that are vital to Islam and enshrined in the teachings of the Holy Quran.
A two-day Convention of the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) organised by the South Auckland Muslim Association (SAMA) at the Papatoetoe High School had the hallmarks of “strong community support, constructive social engagement and family values.”
Following a general inaugural session (see related reports in this section), women members of the community discussed a number of issues of relevance and importance to them in exclusivity.
Education, health, ways and means of integrating with the local communities and mainstream New Zealand without compromising Islamic values were among the topics that were discussed during the two-day meeting.
The need to bring up children inculcating in them the spirit of humanity, social and community awareness and values of character and good behaviour were also among the topics of discussion.
Officials from the Social Development Ministry, SKIP (Strategies for Kids, Information for Parents), ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) and Statistics New Zealand spoke of their services and apprised the delegates of the latest developments.
As well as talks on First Aid and Breast Cancer Screening, the programme included free health check for women. ‘Modesty is Beautiful’ was the theme of a fashion show conducted exclusively for them.
There were several attractions for youth and children including Jumping Castle, and sports.
Games for adults included Netball, Soccer, Volleyball and Tug of War.
An exhibition of sports and food stalls were among the part of the Convention.
