A number of schools around the country celebrated Sir Peter Blake Leadership Week last fortnight with activities designed to invoke the spirit of leadership among students and teachers.
Students of the Papatoetoe High School in South Auckland marked the week with General Knowledge and other competitions.
Students of the Rimu, Kauri, Kowhai and Pohutukawa houses organised quiz and other competitions to entertain and educate their peers and juniors.
Sutapa Mukund, Gifted & Talented Education Coordinator, said Year 12 students took a lead role in the weeklong activities.
“They launched the ‘Litter-free’ initiative to keep the surroundings clean and inspired others to follow their example.
“They also organised ‘Extreme Edition,’ a quiz contest for staff,” she said.
Year 10 students, led by Rijuta Chakraborty, Joyeeta Bhakta and Aliaya Ali, held a ‘Cake Bake’ sale, raising about $298.
This amount has been earmarked as a donation to ‘World Vision New Zealand,’ an organisation that benefits millions of needy children worldwide.
Last week, 20 students were attending a Leadership Workshop conducted in conjunction with YWCA. Among them were Alana Roberts, Arslan Rana, Daniel Morisa, Elwyn Rae, Jade Morris, Lerry Fa’amsino, Malisa Thay, Manish Kumar, Mylan Ishibashi, Nandita Sami, Rishant Kumar, Sharon McCroskrie, Stacy Munthree and Taniya Patel.

Editor’s Note: Sir Peter James Blake was one of the greatest sports heroes of modern New Zealand. He won the Whitbread Round the World Race and the Jules Verne Trophy (setting the fastest time of 74 days, 22 hours, 17 minutes and 22 seconds on catamaran ‘Enza). He led New Zealand to successive victories at the ‘America’s Cup’ races.
In recognition of his services to yachting, Queen Elizabeth appointed him as the Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1995. The AUT University awarded him an honorary Doctorate in 2000. Pirates killed Sir Peter on December 6, 2001 while he was monitoring environment change along the Amazon River in Brazil.
