Soham Rege and Jeff Sutheridge claimed victory in the New Zealand Open of the Anuj, Anjo, Richard Memorial Badminton matches held in Hamilton last weekend.
Dr Itty Matthew and Dr Prashanth were declared winners in the Community Open, while Ronnie Kurian and Baby Kutty grabbed the Jumble Doubles.
The annual event, organised by the Hamilton Malayalee Association, aims to promote road safety.
Father Joseph, a visiting Jesuit Priest from India started the event with a prayers, while National Party MP David Bennett and Hamilton Boys High School Principal Susan Hassel, spoke about Anuj and the annual Tournament.
Anjo (22), Anuj (17) and Richard (12) were killed in a road accident on July 11, 2005 when they were returning with their friends in their car to Hamilton after a holiday in Hastings.
The incident happened outside Taupo.
Anjo, an engineering student at the Waikato University and Anuj, studying in last year of school were the only sons of K J Antony and Annice, while Richard, a primary school student, was the younger of the two sons of Kurian and Gracy Joseph.
Inspector Leo Toeman, who presided over the prize-giving ceremony, said, there was no alternative to road safety.
“We can avoid fatalities and traffic accidents by following traffic rules and concepts of road safety. Events such as this Tournament help us to realise the value of human life. The importance of road safety cannot be over-emphasised,” he said.
