Model of the Fortnight – 15 Jan 2016

Siblings set the pace for excellence –

It is a joy to see young people pursuing excellence and writing about our achievers in a variety of areas, especially education and sports is always a pleasant exercise.

Lydia Smit, our Model of the Fortnight, the first in 2016 is one such.

This Hamiltonian says that she pushes herself to do her best in everything she does; that includes her scholastic career, Netball and working out at the Gym.

“I have been following my elder brothers since my formative years and follow them implicitly. It did not matter that I have half their size and much younger. I applied this mindset at High School at Morrinsville College,” she said.

Emulative source

Hard Work, perseverance and most important of all, the urge to emulate her brothers in achievements encouraged Lydia to “push through even if odds were against her and come out on top and reach her goals.”

The greatest and most cherished (yet) moment arrived when Lydia passed Level 3 NCEA with Excellence before her external exams. This enabled her to receive a $5000 grant from Waikato University towards her tertiary education.

Academic Achievement

“From March this year, I will be pursuing Bachelor of Management Studies at Waikato University with hopes to once again be pushed out of my comfort zone to succeed against my larger competitors and at the same time have lifetime experience and make lifelong friends,” she said.

According to her, the first lifetime experience that she enjoyed was in 2014 after winning the ‘Miss Face of Beauty New Zealand’ contest and went to Taiwan to compete in the related international pageant.

As well as meeting “the most amazing people and making lifelong friends Lydia participated in ‘Miss Sport,’ winning the fifth place and the ‘Miss Talent’ competition in which she was among the top 15 out of 60 contestants.

“I believe life is a journey that is different for everyone, I wish to make mine happy and full of people I love and who love me,” Lydia said.
