If you hold an Indian Passport that is not ‘machine readable,’ you had better obtain a new one issued by the Indian High Commission in Wellington.
The International Civil Aviation Organisation has announced that effective November 24, 2015, foreign governments may deny visa or entry to any person travelling on ‘Non-Machine Readable Passports’ (NMRPs).
Indian High Commission Charge de Affaires Sandeep Sood said that the Indian government has been issuing Machine Readable Passports since 2001.
“Passports issued before 2001, particularly those issued during mid 1990s valid for 20 years, and all handwritten passports with pasted photographs will come under the NMRPs category. Indian citizens holding such passports valid beyond November 25, 2015 should contact us immediately to avoid any inconvenience while travelling overseas,” he said.
