Celebrated singer, composer, actor and director Tarun Nandha was in Auckland to perform at the Mothers’ Day Celebrations organised by Soni Samaj New Zealand last week.
More than 300 people attended the programme held at Freemans Bay Community Hall.

Born and raised in Fiji, Tarun has a natural flair for composing new tunes, writing lyrics, singing, acting and directing. A graduate in Dramatic Arts and a qualified accountant, he has worked with Hindi film industry music duo Kalyanji Anandji and sung with popular playback singers including Nitin Mukesh, Alka Yagnik and Sonali Vaypayee.
About the Sonis
Established in 1993, Soni Samaj comprises predominantly Indo-Fijians, originally from the districts of Rajkot, Porbandar and Nausari in Gujarat, India.
President Ritesh Raniga said that the Soni community accounts for no more than 50 families in New Zealand, involved in jewellery and related businesses, retailing and other commercial activities. The community also accounts for many professionals.
“The Samaj organises its annual ‘Tirth Yatra,’ visiting temples in Auckland and Hamilton, with this year’s event likely to be held on Sunday, June 21, 2015. We mark occasions such as Mothers’ Day, Fathers’ Day, Diwali and Christmas and undertake a number of projects to collect funds for charitable causes, some of which have included the New Zealand Red Cross and the Christchurch Earthquake Relief Fund,” he said.
Mr Raniga said that the Samaj is currently considering ways and means of raising funds for the victims of the earthquakes that devastated Nepal.
