This Friday, November 8, 2024, St George’s Hall, Epsom, Auckland will be transformed into a vibrant celebration of storytelling, dance, and tradition as Aroha – Train of Love takes the stage. Organised by Rambutan Media Works NZ Limited, this unique event promises an evening filled with the diverse cultural treasures of Aotearoa, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and India.
A Journey of Love and Heritage
Audiences will embark on a four-part cultural journey, starting in Aotearoa. Here, Kawharu Parata, a descendant of the Waikato and Te Whanau an Apanui tribe, will introduce attendees to Māori customs and the origins of the poi—a cultural icon that was originally used as a form of ancient weaponry. Accompanied by descendants from Ngati Tamaoho in Pukekohe, Kawharu’s presentation will include a live demonstration, allowing attendees to experience the rhythm and grace of this cherished Māori tradition.
The Train of Love will then make its way to Malaysia, where Tulasi Navalan will share a folklore about the Batu Caves, or Bathumalai, one of Malaysia’s most sacred Hindu sites. This story provides a glimpse into the spiritual and cultural essence of the caves, bringing to life a landmark that draws millions of devotees each year. Following the folklore, Shana Rajasingham will perform a soulful Malay song, capturing the heart of Malaysia through her music.
Exploring Sri Lanka and India
After Malaysia, the audience will journey to Sri Lanka, the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean.” Anushka Wimalasena will lead attendees into the heart of Sri Lankan folklore, sharing stories rich in the country’s ancient traditions and hospitality. Following the folklore, Nishi Ranatunga will perform a traditional Sri Lankan dance, capturing the elegance and beauty of Sri Lanka’s dance heritage.
The final stop on this cultural journey will be India, renowned for its profound history, vibrant festivals, and classical arts. Annapoorani Kalyanasundaram will captivate the audience with Indian folklore that illuminates the values and customs woven into the heart of Indian communities. The evening will conclude with a Bharatanatyam performance by Ambika Krishnamoorthy, whose classical Indian dance will showcase the intricate artistry that has become emblematic of India’s cultural legacy.
An Evening of Unity and Cultural Appreciation
Through the stories and performances of Aroha – Train of Love, attendees will experience the power of cultural diversity and the universal values that bind us together. Organisers have shared that the evening is designed to foster love, unity, and appreciation across cultural boundaries.
Before the main event, a special Snack & Networking session will feature flavours from each represented culture: Mini Samosas (Indian), Coconut Jelly (Malaysian), and Kokis (Sri Lankan).
