The value of the contributions of elders in the community and the ways and means of enhancing support to people who are in the evening of their day will be held in Rotorua next month.

Organised by the Hindu Elders Foundation, a division of the Hindu Council of New Zealand Inc, the Conference, the second in a series, will be held at the Hindu Heritage Centre, located at 225 Malfroy Road, Rotorua on October 26, 2024.

The Conference, under the theme, ‘Old is Gold 2,’ was scheduled to be held earlier on September 28, 2024.

Conference Coordinator and Hindu Council President Dr Guna Magesan said that the conference aims to celebrate and empower Hindu elders, fostering their active participation in the community.

Progress over the years

“Building on the success of the first conference held on 3rd October 2009, which was inaugurated by the then-Māori King, the forthcoming event will again focus on the importance of elders in modern society. The opening session will feature a keynote presentation reflecting on the progress and impact of the past 15 years,” he said.

Three other sessions will be devoted respectively to discussing working with government agencies, collaborating with non-government agencies and service providers and positive ageing, health, and well-being of Elders.

“Preparations are progressing smoothly. We have extended invitations to a wide range of stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and the health sector, to ensure a comprehensive discussion on issues important to our elders. Our goal is to facilitate networking opportunities for elders and their families, helping them build supportive networks,” Dr Magesan said.

Widespread interest

Hindu Elders Foundation Auckland Secretary Yatish Wadhera said that many Hindu elders from across New Zealand are eager to attend and support the Rotorua community.

“We expect about 100 participants with significant interest already shown by community members. This is a valuable opportunity for dialogue, with representatives from senior citizen organisations, community groups, NGOs, and government agencies participating,” he said.

Dr Magesan has issued an open invitation to all Hindu elders and their families to attend the conference.

“This event offers a unique opportunity to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and engage with the wider community, all while promoting the rich cultural heritage of Hindu Dharma,” he said.
