Hamilton City Council’s renowned ‘Your Neighbourhood’ roadshow is making its highly anticipated stop in Hamilton West on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at the scenic Elliott Park in Nawton.

Teaming up with the Western Community Centre, this vibrant and inclusive event promises a day of exploration, engagement, and entertainment for the entire community, completely free of charge.

About the event

‘Your Neighbourhood’ is an initiative to bring Hamiltonians together, and educate them about the various initiatives in the city. The primary aim of the event is to provide Hamiltonians with an invaluable opportunity to delve deeper into the array of services offered by the Hamilton City Council.

The attendees will also gain insight into the ambitious plans laid out for Hamilton over the coming decade, while the local community and health services will be on hand to showcase the diverse range of support available within the community.

Fun for all ages

The day’s festivities promise to cater to every interest and age group. From an oversized snakes and ladders board to tantalising treats served up by food trucks, and the quintessential Kiwi sausage sizzle, there is something to delight every palate.

Cultural performances by local kapa haka groups and live music from talented acts like Zentarge and Maeroa Intermediate School will provide a captivating backdrop throughout the day.

Janet Carson, the Council’s General Manager of Partnerships, Communication, and Māori, highlights the excitement awaiting the younger attendees, mentioning face painting sessions and the thrilling opportunity to swing from trees under the guidance of park and arborist staff.

“Hamilton community to come together, celebrate, and contribute to the shaping of their city’s future. So, gather your whānau and immerse yourselves in a day filled with food, fun, and meaningful conversations,” she said.

Community Engagement

The event serves a dual purpose beyond entertainment. Falling within the Council’s 2024-34 Long-Term Plan consultation period, it provides a crucial platform for community engagement.

Attendees are encouraged to voice their opinions and provide feedback on the Council’s draft budget and proposed plans for the next decade.

Ms Carson stresses the significance of community input, urging attendees to “have a say in what your council does.”

Council staff will be readily available to field questions and provide insights into the proposed initiatives, including explanations behind potential rate increases, financial implications for the city, and eligibility criteria for rate rebates.

With consultation closing on April 21, 2024, the event offers a timely opportunity for community members to actively shape the future of their city.

Successful events in the past

The Your Neighbourhood roadshow is a recurring initiative by the Council, held three times a year, traversing various communities throughout the city.

The Council has highlighted that past events have been met with enthusiasm in locales such as Peacocke, Rototuna, Crawshaw, Claudelands, the central city, Melville, and Fairfield, fostering a sense of community engagement and participation.
