The “Great Retirement” or “Silver Tsunami” is a phrase that has been gaining traction, capturing the impending wave of retirements among Baby Boomers. As this generation, born between 1946 and 1964, reaches retirement age in droves, it is poised to reshape our economy, labour market, and social dynamics.
Author and economist Robert M. Reynolds sheds light on this phenomenon, stating, “The Baby Boomers are the wealthiest generation in the history of the world. They have been a very influential generation on our society as they have aged, and they are continuing to be so as they retire.”
The ripple effects of this massive demographic shift are being felt across society, and the profound impact of their departure from the workforce is shaping various facets of our communities remains to be seen.
Economic Landscape
The retirement of Baby Boomers has substantial implications for the economy. Dr Angela Martinez, an economist specialising in demographic trends, emphasises, “The sheer size of the Baby Boomer generation means a significant portion of the workforce is bidding farewell to their careers.
