Although the Tamil entertainment industry has produced scores of top comedians and humourists over several centuries, standup comedy is comparatively new to the community. Today it sparkles with several bright stars and Jagan Krishnan is one of them.

His show at the Bill Gallagher Event Centre on Wednesday (July 19, 2023) was different and enjoyable, says Srinivasan Jaganathan, President of the Waikato Tamil Society, which supported the Jagan Krishnan Show.

“Unlike many contemporaries who regale in running down people in the name of comedy, Jagan Krishnan was refreshingly simplistic and self-effacing. He took all the jokes on himself and made the evening not only pleasant but also non-abrasive. He presented his show like a love story and used his guitar to provide a musical background,” he said.

Jagan used the words of Socrates to describe himself: “You ain’t seen nothing until you see Jagan.

It is a shame none of the disciples of the great Greek Philosopher.

He is the 43rd standup comedian to look out on Mars according to a recent NASA poll. He studies comedy and has a rare mastery over multiple genres of standup, especially story-telling and cracking jokes. His strength in standup comedy is the long-lasting impression, with his content and delivery that captivate the audience.”

About Standup Comedy

Stand-up comedy is a light-hearted performance to a live audience in which the performer addresses people directly from the stage. Comprising one-liners, mimicry, stories, observations and a shtick are all part of the scenario which could be embellished by props, music, magic, ventriloquism and other forms of entertainment.

Over the years, Indian Newslink has promoted many visiting and resident stand-up comedians, including Tarun Mohanbhai, Karthik Kumar and Anil Desai.

Standup comedy can be performed almost anywhere, including comedy clubs, festivals, bars, nightclubs, theatres and at college events.

Stand-up as a Western art form has its roots in the stump speech of American minstrel shows, which featured an actor in blackface delivering a nonsensical monologue to the audience. While the intention of stump speeches was to mock African-Americans, they also occasionally contained political and social satire. The minstrel show would later influence theatrical traditions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as vaudeville and burlesque.

Having joined the comedy circuit a bit late, Tamil stand-up comedy is still in its infancy stage in the state. Yet, in the age where social media and online streaming platforms are becoming household staples, stand-up comedians in Chennai are carving out a niche for themselves in South India, particularly in Tamil Nadu.

Rambutan Media Works NZ Limited has organised the visit of Jagan Krishnan and his Jagane Thandhiram performances in the three principal cities.
