Lovers of Shakespearean Theatre can expect a high quality production from the members of the University of Canterbury Indian Students Association next week.
The Association is presenting ‘Rose,’ a drama adopted from Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo & Juliet,’ with a Bollywood twist at the Jack Mann Auditorium located at the Canterbury University Campus in Christchurch from July 17 to 19, 2014.

Shawn Kurian Thomas, who is among the producers, said that ‘Rose’ will carry a number of original dance numbers from well-known Hindi films.
Ground-breaking Theatre
“This is ground-breaking Indian theatre with a musical twist, directed by former Associate Artistic Director of The Court Theatre – Bryan Aitken. The show will bring many elements and conventions of Indian theatre and explore the issues of Romeo and Juliet through the culture and values within the Indian society,” he said.
Mr Thomas said that food stalls selling North and South Indian cuisine will be an added attraction at the Theatre.
William Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet early in his career. It narrates the life and love of two young, star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare’s most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with ‘Hamlet’, it is one of his most frequently performed plays.
Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers.
