Solidarity, speeches and entertainment were among the features of the 20th Anniversary celebrations of the Auckland based Shanti Niwas Charitable Trust.
The Trust had invited a number of dignitaries, politicians and community leaders to participate in the event held at its Onehunga premises (14 Spring Street) on May 24.
Among them were Members of Parliament Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi (National) Dr Rajen Prasad, Carol Beaumont (Labour) Hon Consul for Bangladesh and Shanti Niwas Trustee Ataur Rahman, Radio Tarana Managing Director Robert Khan, Lifewise Homecare Case Manager Jennie Rissetto, community leaders Ashok Gaur, Jaya Thapar, Joginder Lutra and Sunny Kaushal.
Established by Indu Bajaj in 1994, Shanti Niwas has several achievements to its credit, the most significant of which is the comfort and care that it offers to the senior members of the society. Men and women, who often feel the pinch of solitude and sometime neglect, find this organisation a good avenue to meet, read, engage in conversation and play meaningful games.
Project Manager Nilima Venkat said that among the projects and programmes implemented thus far in 2014 include the ‘Auckland Community Safety Ambassadors’ with the Auckland City District Police, talks on ‘Home-based Support Services’ by HealthCare New Zealand, ‘Healthy Ageing’ by Dr Saurabh Majmundar, Knitting for underprivileged children through Middlemore Foundation and outings to a number of places in Auckland.
She said that the Trust marked the ‘World Elder Abuse Awareness Day’ on June 12.
