The family of a murdered man has received some financial relief, thanks to the contribution of his employer.
Reliance Forex Limited Company Managing Director V Giri said that an undisclosed amount has been transferred to the family of Charanpreet Dhaliwal, who was murdered at a West Auckland worksite managed by Fulton Hogan.
“We are pleased to confirm that Fulton Hogan recognised the deep loss that Dhaliwal’s family, particularly his mother Karamjit Kaur has suffered and made a contribution to relieve their financial burden,” he said.
Mr Giri said that the Sikh community and the Amalgamated Western Union worked with the company to resolve the issue.
Dhaliwal, employed by CNE Security as a security guard, was killed on his first shift at work. The Auckland District Court had ruled earlier that the company was not responsible for his death.
The accused
A 27-year old, accused of the murder, is on trial and Crown Prosecutor Yelena Yelavich told the Court that he had allegedly left Dhaliwal dying as he drove to the city to drink with his friends. He is also facing a separate charge of assaulting another person on the same night.
She said that the accused, who has name suppression, after drinking at a house in Glendene, he and three friends drove around West Auckland looking for a bar where they could drink. They were dropped off at Chicks Nightclub in Henderson, during the early hours of November 18, 2011.
According to Ms Yelavich, the bouncer at the Club refused them entry since they did not have appropriate identity. The accused had allegedly punched the side of his head and threw a bottle at him.
The killing
“The accused and his three friends then ran to a nearby construction site operated by Fulton Hogan in Selwood Road to hide from the bouncer.
“Dhaliwal found the accused and his friends hiding in the site. He asked them to leave and threatened to call the police. The accused then allegedly struck him repeatedly with a piece of wood. Dhaliwal was struck down and as he lay in a pool of his own blood, a friend of the accused stole his wallet.
“A night road-working unit found Dhaliwal’s body,” she said.
