Filimoni Vosarogo, Deputy Leader the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), Fiji’s main opposition party, has announced that he is joining People’s Alliance Party (PAP) to contest in general election due in 2022.

PAP is being led by former Prime Minister and former SODELPA Leader Sitiveni Rabuka.

Mr Vosarogo said that he spoke on the need for a unified Party at the Annual General Meeting of SOLDELPA last year.

It is only a year since he became the Deputy Leader of the Party, which has been plagued with intra-party conflicts since 2019.

“I have consulted with peers, close friends and those who supported me in the lead up to appointment as Deputy Leader up last year. I have the confidence of my family in this decision. I will be joining the People’s Alliance party as an ordinary member from next week, supporting the Party at the general election due to be held next year,” he said.

SODELPA President Ratu Epenisa Cakobau confirmed the resignation of Mr Vosarogo.

“The Party respects his decision and thanks him for his services. We also acknowledge the support given by his family during his time with the Party,” he said.

Mr Rabuka welcomed Vosarogo, saying, “I have worked with him. He was my solicitor and I know what he brings to the Party. Many MPs in SODELPA are ready to defect and join PAP.”
