The Fijian Muslim community living in Fiji has shown compassion and solidarity to the people of New Zealand with their donations.
Suva based Fiji Muslim League President Hafizud Dean Khan appealed to Muslims attending all Mosques and Islamic Centres throughout Fiji to donate a ‘Gold Coin’ each at the Friday (Juma) Prayers.
“We feel sorry for the victims of the devastating earthquake that has resulted in the loss of many people and properties. Although a poor country, we would like to do our best for the people of Christchurch,” he said.
Mr Khan said the community in Fiji stood in solidarity as good neighbours during a difficult hour.
“New Zealand and New Zealanders have always stood by us during our hours of natural calamities such as cyclones and hurricanes leading to severe floods. It is our turn now to do the best we can to offer relief to them,” Mr Khan said.
He said the Fiji Muslim League was coordinating with the Wellington based Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) in mobilising support for Canterburians.
