The Auckland Indian Association (AIA) has teamed up with a popular member of the community to offer a programme that would attract people to take up physical exercise in an atmosphere filled with fun and excitement.
Ella Kumar, a popular community worker, who was elected to the Puketapapa (including Mt Roskill) Local Board at the Local Body elections held in October 2010, will conduct the programme every week.
Called, ‘Bollyrobix’ (exercise to Bollywood music), it will be held every Saturday between 730 am and 830 am at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre, located at 145 New North Road in Eden Terrace.
AIA Public Relations Officer Dhiru Patel said the programme was open to all.
“Bollyrobix would suit men and women of all ages and of course the younger members of the society. They can exercise according to their own ability and fitness,” he said.
Mr Patel said an increasing number of people of Indian origin and those from South Asia were being diagnosed with several ailments including diabetes, blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases.
“Obesity is a major cause, aggravated by lack of exercise. It is time each of us took responsibility for our health and found time for physical exercise,” Mr Patel said.
As well as conducting the programme, Ms Kumar, a qualified and registered exercise instructor, will provide nutritional information, he said.
The programme is free for AIA members but would cost $2 per week for non-members.
