Olympian on controlled diet for charity

One of New Zealand’s three-time-Olympians has just traded her Olympic glamour for a small taste of poverty.

Black Sticks Captain Kayla Sharland signed up to ‘Live Below the Line for P3 Foundation, living at just $2.25 per day on food and drink from September 24 to 28, 2012.

This is the daily reality for more than1.4 billion people around the world who live below the International Poverty Line.

“I think it is important to understand what they go through every day, especially while trying to survive on $2.25 a day. We probably take it a little bit for granted,” Kayla said.

However, this is not the only motivation for Kayla to complete the challenge.

Fundraising efforts

All money raised through P3 Foundation is doubled by the Glenn Family Foundation, founded by Owen Glenn, providing substantial funding to Hockey New Zealand.

“Obviously, with Owen coming onboard, hockey has really improved. Therefore, I am interested in helping and supporting his Foundation,” Kayla said.

Introduced by Global Poverty Project in 2011, Live Below the Line ‘now involves eight partner organisations, including the ‘P3 Foundation’ by younger members of the society.

Kayla encourages New Zealanders to donate to P3 Foundation by taking part in the Live Below the Line Challenge and emphasised the importance of eating smart as a sportsperson as well,

P3 Foundation has raised about $15,000, against the target of $50,000, which will be doubled (to $100,000) with the help of the Glenn Family Foundation.

The money raised will be used for improving the life of people in Gairai Goan village in Kalimpong, North East India.
